There are three common possibilities. If it is painful flaky skin, it is probably swimmers ear. Keep the ear canal dry, blotting it with the corner of a tissue, or pointing a hair blower toward the ear. Hold the hair blower about 8 - 12 inches from the ear, and DON'T DO IT IN A WET BATHING SUIT! You may need a steroid drop in a suspension if the discomfort and pain persist.

If it is dermatitis of the ear canal, there are steroid drops in an oily base that the physician can prescribe.

But most commonly, it really is a thin, dry wax, a trait that is usually inherited. One trick is to instill Colase into the ear canal for several days, then lavage out using warm water and an ear syringe. Colase (sodium docusate) is a stool softener, but using it to soften ear wax is a common off-label use.

Don't put drops in an ear if the patient has pe tubes, unless the doctor gives the OK.
i have dry facial skin and dry skin in both my ears. i use a prescription called dermatop. it's not over the counter, but does work.
Olive oil, though I haven't used it, I know it is safe because they tell you to use it when you have water in your ear from swimming.
I would ask a Dr. before you put anything in your ears. !!!
